Visiting Cody Wyoming

Cody, Wyoming is a neat little town that has a lot to offer for a small package. We stopped in to Cody, Wyoming for a day on our journey to Yellowstone. This was the last stop before heading into the park and I was so happy that we made the stop.

On our way into Cody we were driving for what seemed to be a lifetime. Heading down a empty road in the middle of nowhere I happened to catch something out of the corner of my eye. It was an all black wild horse. Just standing on the side of the road. It was such a cool experience to see it there. Very majestic. My wife and kids did not get to see it so maybe it was just a mirage….I don’t know.

Here is where we stayed and some things we did while visiting Cody, Wyoming.

Cody KOA Holiday

Heading into Yellowstone we wanted to stop into Cody, WY for a night and do some sight-seeing. Well to be honest what we really wanted to do was have a Cowboy Dinner that is offered in Cody. Unfortunately, when we decided to visit was during the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic. We didn’t want to book something that could be affected by a shutdown or cancellations.

So, instead we just stopped in to the KOA and figured we would find something in the area to entertain us. The Cody KOA Holiday in Cody, Wyoming is a nice small campsite. It offered some Amenities that will make your stay nice. It does not go above and beyond but what it does offer is a nice, clean and organized campsite.

Some Amenities the KOA offers include Wi-Fi and cable TV, full hookups with 50 AMP service 100’ max length. The campsite has a hot tub and a heated pool that is open from 5/26-9/7. It offers a very nice clean and not overcrowded playground for the kids, giant chess set, cornhole, and jump pillow that kids of all ages will enjoy.

You can enjoy a free pancake breakfast in the mornings before heading out to see the town. In the evenings, you can enjoy the shuttle that will take you to the Night Rodeo. If you want to make this your basecamp to Yellowstone, you are only about an hour away from the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

No matter what your plan is, in and around Cody, WY. This KOA can serve as a great basecamp for you and the family. We spent all waking hours that we were in the KOA in the playground. I think it was a very nice playground for the kids. It has a fence all the way around it. So I only had to worry about the kids coming and going from one entrance. That is always a nice feature for me.

Old Trail Town Cody, Wyoming

Visiting Cody and want to see how the old cowboys used to live? A must do while visiting Cody, WY is the old Trail Town. This is located next to Stampede Park, where the rodeo is held nightly. It contains many different authentic frontier buildings from the 1890’s. There is a lot of history in this small section of Cody and the Old Trail town helps capture that.

We spent a few hours here going into all the building and reading all the plaques. Showing us what we where seeing and how the buildings where used. The kids enjoyed seeing the decorations in the buildings. Running around being little cowboys. Hearing us tell them the stories of all the cowboys and some gruesome gun battles that had happened.

What I enjoyed most was the gravesites, there is quite a few gravesites from the 1800’s-1900’s. The stories of the individuals buried there are fascinating. It gives you the feeling of how wild, the wild west really was. All these gravesites share stories of murders, jealousy, war, and even a bear attack.

It was amazing to me that these cowboys lived in such a way. Starvation was a real worry and making sure cattle could eat and drink was a concern. While just over the mountains is Yellowstone National Park. A park filled with animals of all kinds and abundant rivers filled with fresh fish. It is really something to think about! Life was so hard and most of them never even knew that paradise was just over the ridge.

Of course, to get to paradise would have been the toughest journey of their life. Without any roads crossing the mountain would be almost impossible. The presence of Indians all in the hills would have made the convoy a life or death situation in itself.
