Guadalupe Mountains National Park: Hiking Trails for All Ages
Guadalupe Mountains National Park Our last stop in Texas during our 2024 Summer of Sunscreen…
I know that the cover photo I have at the top of the page is not the best picture I have ever taken. What I was trying to capture with that photo was how large our campsite at Harrisonburg Shenandoah Valley KOA was. Out of all the KOA campgrounds we have stayed at Harrisonburg Shenandoah Valley KOA easily had the largest “yard” we have ever had. With that being said, not all of the campsites had this large of a yard but ours did. I thought that was amazing! I loved letting the kids run around and not have to worry about them running into somebody else’s site.
Harrisonburg Shenandoah Valley KOA is a great place to stay when visiting Shenandoah National Park. You still will have a bit of a drive to the entrance, approximately 50 minutes but only about 30 miles away. You can find campgrounds that are closer to the Park entrance. What I noticed was those parks are not to the same standard as this KOA.
Also, those parks are right along the main road to go into the park and have a lot of traffic and noise at all hours of the day. Shenandoah KOA is located away from all that noise. It makes you feel like you are staying in the park without actually staying inside the park. There is an abundance of large mature trees that blend right in with the surrounding atmosphere allowing you to feel like you are tucked away within the mountains. I highly suggest staying at this KOA if you have a RV and looking for a full hookup site that gives you the feeling of being away from outside world.
Like most KOA locations Harrisonburg Shenandoah Valley KOA has all the amenities a family could want while traveling. They can accommodate rigs up to 75 ft long and offer 50-amp service for any and all RV camping. There is a full gift shop that had really good Shenandoah National Park gifts within it. They also have light groceries and small everyday items needed for RV camping. You can get firewood on site and since you are not in the National Park you can actually burn it here. One thing that drives me nuts is when I purchase wood and it is unburnable. Usually because it is not dried seasoned wood. We purchased many bags of wood at this KOA and all the wood was cut, dry, and ready to burn!
There is also a pool onsite that is open from 5/29-9/26. The pool was super cold but Killian and Jameson did not seem to mind. They spent about an hour in the pool before we had to pull them out because their lips were turning blue. Right next to the pool is a large well-maintained playground that we utilized on multiple occasions. If the pool and playground is not your thing then you may enjoy the full cable tv that is included with your campground. One thing that I wish I would have taken advantage of was the disk golf course located right on site. I was not into disk golf then, but I do love it now. Funny how a few months can change so much! Prefer to just go on a hike? There is even a KOA owned hiking trail that goes around the campground for your enjoyment.
