Discovering White Sands National Park: A Family Adventure in Nature’s Playground
White Sands National Park: Nature’s Playground WE FOUND SNOW IN NEW MEXICO!!!! Nah not really,…
So I am going to be completely honest with you all. I did not expect nor really want to come to San Antonio. The plan was to go to Big Bend National Park for the next few days after leaving Galveston. Unfortunately, it is July and we found out there may be frequent power outages going on as well as temps well over 100 degrees. So, we opted to come to San Antonio to visit the Alamo instead.
Coming to the San Antonio/Alamo KOA Holiday I actually was getting a little concerned. We came from I-10 and the area seemed a little run down. The good news? Once we turned into the KOA, we seen that they have security at the entrance as well as a fenced in park. That made us feel a lot better about our decision to stay here.
The pool is nice and of course with-it being July it is packed. This KOA has a beautiful fishing pond with a covered gazebo as well as a 7-mile walking trail that allows you to get the exercise in while on vacation.
More important than all of that is what this campground will give you at your site. There are a lot of mature shade trees in the area. That means that almost all the sites have some shade at some point of the day. I can tell you coming from Galveston where there was zero shade and one of our AC units failed, this makes me very happy to see.
Also, the water pressure is great here. I don’t have to tell you a bad shower on vacation can lead to a horrible mindset. Something about a good shower makes you feel…. human. Lastly and most important to my kids is the internet. Great internet once again. This is two KOA in a row that has amazing internet. I know I am getting spoiled by this and at some point. I will be throwing a fit because of crappy internet, but today is not that day.
I am not going to lie to you. We did not do much in San Antonio. We spent most of our time around a campfire and at the pool. With that being said we did go into town one day to explore the Alamo and the river walk. I highly recommend both of them.
We decided to do a free tour of the Alamo, being able to go inside the church and explore the grounds on our own. As nice as this is to save some money. I would suggest to pay for a guided tour. I do not know much about the Alamo but I can tell you the tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. Being inside such a somber and important place in our history is always a sobering experience. I love how they have kept the Alamo is such great shape and have built an entire city around it, without destroying it.
Once you are finished at the Alamo make the 7-minute walk over to river walk. This is a beautiful experience that is unlike anything I have experienced in any other large city. I would suggest if you are wanting to grab a drink or a bite to eat the river walk is where you want to be. We had some gelato and some frozen margaritas, the boys had cherry limeades.
Everything you could want to eat is down there, from your chain vacation places to local oyster bars. We did not eat as we are trying to save some cash this trip but just walking and enjoying the river while almost completely shaded the entire way was enough to leave me wanting to return
After a day of exploring, unwind with a relaxing boat cruise along the river. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning views of the city skyline as you glide along the water. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, rent a bike and pedal your way through the city streets, taking in the sights and sounds of San Antonio at your own pace.
No matter how you choose to explore, the San Antonio River Walk and its surrounding attractions are sure to leave you with lasting memories of this vibrant city. So lace up your walking shoes, grab a map, and get ready to discover the best of San Antonio on foot. Happy exploring!
