Camping In West Yellowstone Montana

If you are looking for full hookup camping in or around Yellowstone National Park your only 2 reasonable options are going to be either Fishing Bridge Campsite or West Yellowstone Montana. You of coarse could stay anywhere outside the North, South, or East entrance but it will require a lot more driving everyday than West Yellowstone Montana.

West Yellowstone Montana is a small town right outside the West Entrance of Yellowstone National park in Montana. It is approximately 45-minute drive to the Grand Loop Rd without running into any wildlife traffic jams and without any stops. On this post we are going to talk about the perfect place to camp. We will also discuss a pizza place you must try, some shopping that is perfect for gifts, as well as some attractions to visit.

Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park

There are a lot of different campsites you can choose from here in West Yellowstone Montana. I am going to speak about the one that we chose to stay at. I encourage you to do your own research on where is the best location for you and your family.

We chose to stay at Yellowstone grizzly RV Park and I could not be happier with the decision. Located on the edge of town, just outside of the West Entrance to Yellowstone. Grizzly RV Park is the perfect campsite that offers full hookups, paved roads, and a nice patio area.

Grizzly RV Park can accommodate up to 80ft rigs! The campsite has a variety of different type of site to choose from. You can have pull thru or back in sites. Some are satellite friendly and others offer a more shaded experience backing up to a forest. We chose the back in site, pairing up to the forest. It was a perfect location for us.

They offer full hookups including water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp electric, cable TV, and Wi-Fi. They have 5 restrooms and shower houses on site that are handicap accessible. There 3 clean laundry rooms that is very reasonable. There is also a gift shop/supply store right on site for anything you need or forgot.

I highly recommend Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park if you are wanting to stay in a clean RV park and want to have a short drive to be inside the park. It served our family well and kept us close enough to everything we wanted to see. Yet far enough away that we could escape the large crowds.

The kids enjoyed the store that offers a lot of different ice creams. Including a huckleberry flavor.

Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center

Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center

During our visit of Yellowstone, we really wanted to get a good look at the wolves! Unfortunately the wolves had other plans. Lucky for us, the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone Montana has you covered. There are multiple wolves, bears, birds, and other animals in captivity that has been rescued because of being a nuisance or being born in captivity and lacking the skills to live in the wild.

There is also a beautiful display of cut-throat trout on display. They also have otters for the kids to watch in giant tanks. This sanctuary for the animals is located within walking distance from grizzly RV park. It is a must see in my opinion.

The kids enjoyed being able to watch the fish in the giant tank. Their favorite animals were the crows. I know nothing exciting but they loved watching the crows fly in and out of the bear exhibit. Aggravating the bears. They filled the air with their laughter. I must say it brought a smile to my face as well.

Be sure to go online and check out the live webcams for the bears and the wolves.

The City Creamery

It is no secrete to anybody that knows me, I love ice cream. I could eat it every day. While in West Yellowstone Montana we came across huckleberry ice cream. For those of you that don’t know, huckleberry is a wild berry that grows in and around Yellowstone. Huckleberry is a critical part of bears diet. It is needed to fatten up the bears before hibernation. In case you are wondering it does a good job of fatten up people too.

The City Creamery has got the best huckleberry ice cream you can imagine. Head over to the little shack they have located at 105 N Canyon St. Grab a waffle cone filled with huckleberry ice cream. If you are looking for a more traditional flavor they have those as well.

Gusher Pizza and Sandwich Shoppe

There is only so much food we can make inside the camper before a craving for fast food hit. That craving happened to me when we were camping at Grizzly RV Park. That craving, was a pizza craving.

So off we went searching for whatever pizza was in the area. We cannot stand the idea of eating at a chain while on vacation. So we started looking for a local place with unique options. That’s when we found Gusher Pizza and Sandwich Shoppe.

Searching through the menu you will notice a fun theme. Its all Yellowstone National Park theme. Among all the delicious sounding foods we came across the Lamar Pizza. The pizza has sausage that consist of bison, elk, wild boar, venison and antelope. It is just about every animal that dwells in Yellowstone. If it had bear sausage and would be delivered on the back of the wolf, it would have been perfect.

We knew we had to have that pizza so we ordered it up. They will even deliver food to the campsite at Grizzly RV Park. The pizza was hot and delicious. Filling the entire camper with the familiar smell of a fantastic pie. The pizza most definitely crushed the cravings.  It is a mouthwatering memory for us. Make sure you try it yourself.

West Yellowstone Montana West Park Mall

If you are looking for some souvenirs from the Yellowstone area, take a walk down the West Park Mall. This is a good little tourist strip mall that has an old town feel. It consists of many small shops and has just about any souvenir you could want.

This is a great place to get souvenirs for the entire family. Might as well get Christmas shopping done while you are on vacation. We spent a few hours going in and out of all the stores. Buying more coffee mugs and blankets that we do not need.

It is easily within walking distance of Grizzly RV Park. While walking and shopping you will come across the City Creamery. This way you can mark off two items from this list in once swoop.
